The New York Times April 7, 1958, P. 32 League Confirms Opener In Havana International Circuit Votes to Play There on April 16 Unless Shooting Starts MIAMI, April 6 (AP) - The international League voted today to open the baseball season in Havana on April 16 as scheduled "unless conditions materially change" in Cuba. Frank J. Shaughnessy, league president, made the announcement at the end of the two-hour closed meeting of directors. Newsmen asked what he meant by "materially change," and he responded "Shooting people down there." But he continued: "It's as quiet there as it is here now." Shaughnessy said the vote by directors was unanimous. John C. Stilmeir of Buffalo, whose club opens the season in Havana, said he was "happy over our decision." Earlier, he had objected to his team being used as what he called "guinea pigs." But today he said "conditions have changed. There isn't the danger in was." The head of the Havana club, Roberto Maduro, said there's no fighting in Havana and western Cuba. He told newsmen, "Why, the rebels are 750 miles from Havana in the mountains." Shaughnessy said he would keep in close touch with the Cuban situation. In response to a question, he said if conditions change "I have the authority to move the Havana club out of that country." "We could move to Jersey City Tomorrow," he said.
