Cuba Honeymoon that Got a Site Worse

A couple were forced to swap their dream honeymoon in Cuba for a weekend at a Scots caravan site.

Tony McGinley and wife Melanie were evacuated just two days after they arrived at their plush hotel in the town of Cayo Coco as Hurricane Ivan approached.

The newlyweds had to make a 15-hour journey to the Dominican Republic, where they both suffered upset stomachs.

They then had to wait four days for a flight home and are now staying at a single-berth caravan in Inveraray, Argyll.

Stationery salesman Tony, 31, said last night: 'We were absolutely gutted. For two days it was the dream honeymoon.

'It has been an ordeal and all we want now is some peace and quiet so we are going to spend what's left of our honeymoon at my auntie's caravan.'

The Edinburgh couple, who paid almost £2500for the holiday, now want a refund and compensation from First Choice Holidays.

They say they shouldn't have been moved as the hurricane never hit their resort.

Tony added: 'The company forced us to evacuate. We had no choice, even though other firms allowed their customers to stay.'

First Choice said they had offered to repay half the cost of the honeymoon.

A spokeswoman added: 'The decision to evacuate was made with the safety of our customers in mind based upon information wehad from a number of reliable sources.'

Tony and child care worker Melanie, 28, were among hundreds of Brits flown out of Cuba. They were given less than an hour to pack up and board a bus for the airport.

Tony added: 'Our time in the Dominican Republic was a nightmare. We had upset stomachs, probably brought on by stress.'

The couple arrived in Inveraray yesterday and Tony said: 'We only hope the weather stays fair for us. At least there's little chance of being hit by a hurricane.'
