Peru arrests daughter of ex-advisor Montesinos

LIMA, Peru -- (EFE) -- Peruvian authorities arrested Silvana Montesinos, the oldest daughter of former presidential advisor Vladimiro Montesinos, saying they had evidence that she was helping rebuild her father's corruption network.

The arrest was announced Thursday, the day after it took place.

In a press release, judicial authorities said Silvana Montesinos ``was to have contacted a Venezuelan national in Peru who was to receive bank notes from her.''

Peruvian officials said the information came from Venezuelan police, who discovered it while sifting through documents seized from Montesinos when he was arrested in Caracas on June 23.

Montesinos directed the security services under former President Alberto Fujimori and was Fujimori's senior advisor. A rift between the two men last year led to
Montesinos' dismissal and triggered a series of political upheavals that ended with Fujimori resigning and fleeing to Japan. Montesinos is in jail awaiting trial on numerous charges.

Silvana Montesinos has been under investigation since last year for alleged complicity in the illegal enrichment of her father and others who comprised the corruption
network he established. She was detained at the end of last year, but authorities released her a few weeks later after determining that there was no substantial proof to link her to her father's illegal network.
