Jailed Mexican singer considers marrying a Brazilian diplomat

BRASILIA - (EFE) -- Mexican singer Gloria Trevi, who was arrested two years ago in Brazil and is wanted by the courts in her country, plans to marry a
Brazilian diplomat, which might give her immunity from extradition, her attorneys said Tuesday.

''If she marries a diplomat, she will have the right to a diplomatic passport and treatment as an ambassador. This may affect legal proceedings in both
Brazil and Mexico,'' said Geraldo Magela, one of Trevi's attorneys.

According to reports published Tuesday in the newspaper O Globo, Trevi accepted a marriage proposal from diplomat Cesario Lopes de Alexandria, who
works in the passport section of the Brazilian Foreign Ministry.

''All we know is that Alexandria informed his superiors of his intention to marry Gloria Trevi in compliance with Foreign Ministry regulations, but that can
only be confirmed by the ministry,'' Magela said.

The romance between the diplomat and the singer, who had a baby this year who was conceived while she was in jail in Brasilia, might have started last
year when Alexandria asked for permission to visit Trevi, saying he was a fan.

Alexandria has continued to visit Trevi both in jail and at the Asa Norte Regional Hospital, where the Mexican singer has been held in federal police
custody since the end of last year.

Although Trevi attorney Otavio Neves told O Globo that the marriage would not affect extradition proceedings, fellow defense attorney Magela said
  ``anything is possible.''

''The Supreme Court has not yet ruled on the singer's extradition, and if Trevi obtains diplomatic immunity, things could change,'' Magela insisted.

Magela also noted that even if Trevi were extradited, the singer would have the right to request special treatment in Mexico, where she faces charges of
  child abuse.
