105 suspected migrants found in 2 trucks

GABRIELA RICO

A total of 105 suspected illegal immigrants were found in the cargo areas of two U-Haul rental trucks after their drivers abandoned them along Interstate 19 yesterday. Two Border Patrol agents spotted the trucks traveling on Burro Lane in Tubac and followed them north, said Greg Maier, a spokesman for the Border Patrol's Tucson sector.

The driver of the first truck pulled into the rest area near kilometer 48 and fled into the desert. One of the agents opened the cargo area and found 46 people.

The second agent stayed with the other truck, which pulled off the interstate near kilometer 56. That driver also ran off. That agent found 59 people in the cargo area.

Both drivers got away because the agents stayed to tend to the people, Maier said. No one reported any injuries.

The trucks have a cargo area that is 16 feet long and 7 feet wide.

The people were still being processed last night, and their nationality was unknown, Maier said.
