They reportedly tried to dodge a Border Patrol checkpoint on Interstate 19 near Tubac by driving on railroad tracks.

LUKE TURF

Three vehicles that tried to use railroad tracks in Tubac to dodge a Border Patrol checkpoint on Interstate 19 Wednesday got stuck in the desert, the Border Patrol said.
After one van ended up in a ravine, a second crashed into the back of it, and a truck stalled while trying to get around them.

Nineteen suspected illegal immigrants from Mexico fled but were caught, and two with injuries stayed in the vehicles. No smugglers were identified, according to a Border Patrol news release. The injured were taken to hospitals in Tucson and Nogales.

None of the vehicles was reported stolen, and all were turned over to Santa Cruz County sheriff's deputies, who are investigating.

Crash nets 1,477 pounds of pot

Border Patrol agents responding Wednesday to an illegal vehicle entry near the San Pedro River about 40 miles east of Nogales arrested a Mexican man who tried to flee.

The 22-year-old man's pick-up rolled on Smith Road, according to an agency news release. The man climbed from the vehicle and fled on foot, at one point pulling out pepper spray.

Agents caught the man and found 1,477 pounds of marijuana in the truck. The man, truck and marijuana were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration, which estimated the marijuana's value at $1.81 million.
