Coast Guard repatriates 34 migrants to Cuba

MARATHON - (AP) -- The Coast Guard said Sunday it repatriated 34 Cuban migrants who were picked up at sea in two separate incidents.

All the migrants were taken to Bahia de Cabanas, Cuba. The first group of three migrants was spotted on a raft Aug. 21 about 60 miles south of Key West. The second group of 31 migrants was found Aug. 24 on a boat 21 miles southwest of Elbow Cay, Bahamas.

Three people suspected of smuggling in the second group were being processed by the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Coast Guard said.

Under U.S. policy, most Cuban migrants found at sea are sent back to their island nation, while those who reach U.S. land are generally allowed to stay.
