Body believed to be that of Cuban rafter

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla., March 30 (UPI) -- The body of a man washed ashore at Hutchinson Island, Fla., is believed to be one of the five who drowned in an attempt to escape Cuba last week.

Three others on the journey on the inner tube raft made it to shore in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., the Port St. Lucie Tribune reported Tuesday.

"A call to the Coast Guard revealed that a group of Cubans had been rescued south of here, and some were missing," a Martin County sheriff's report said.

"This is likely to be one of the missing," it said.

The body was dragged to shore after it was spotted Saturday.

The three survivors said eight people had left Jibicoa, Cuba, March 18 on the makeshift raft. The survivors arrived Thursday.

All three suvivors were hospitalized. One was released Monday, but the other two remain in Holy Cross Hospital for treatment of dehydration and other ailments.
