Cuba denies Elian 'brainwash' attempt

ANDREWS AIR FORCE BASE, Maryland (CNN) -- Cuban officials denied Tuesday that they are trying to convince Elian Gonzalez to say he wants to return to the island.

The 6-year-old boy remained in seclusion with his father, Juan Miguel Gonzalez, and other Cuban family members at Andrews Air Force Base, near Washington, where they were reunited on Saturday. Elian was seized by armed federal agents who raided the home of his Miami relatives.

Since then, the boy has not been seen in public. Only a few photographs of him have been released.

The Miami relatives and their supporters fear that with Elian out of public view, the Cuban government will try to manipulate his thoughts. Jose Garcia-Pedrosa, an attorney for the Miami relatives, told CNN he believed the "brainwashing" of Elian would begin in Washington.

The allegation is "completely false," said Luis Fernandez, a spokesman for the Cuban Interests Section -- the Havana government's unofficial embassy in Washington.

He said Cuban diplomats are doing nothing more than "helping," providing the Cuban family with clothing and food, including mango juice. "It's his favorite," Fernandez said.

Cuban officials are not present at Andrews at all hours and are not advising the family, Fernandez said.

The son of Fernando Remirez, the top diplomat at the Cuban Interests Section,  spent time at the base on Monday playing with Elian. Fernandez said the two boys are near in age and get along well.
