Cuban Bystander Slain

Batista Aide, Gunmen’s Target, and 2 Other Persons Injured

HAVANA, Sept. 29 – One person was killed and three were wounded tonight in the heart of Havana in an attempt to kill Luis Manuel Martinez, leader of the youth movement of President Fulgencio Batista’s Progressive party. Señor Martinez,  one of the most active propagandists of the regime, was one of those wounded.

Assailants opened fire with revolvers on Señor Martinez in the crowded midtown district.  Sixto Careiro, a merchant, was killed.  A woman and a youth were wounded in the shooting.  Police arrested the wounded youth when they found a revolver in his possession.

Señor Martinez is assistant editor of the afternoon newspaper Tiempo, owned by Senator Rolando Masferrer, a supporter of President Batista.

President Fulgencio Batista told a United States television audience yesterday that Cuba would enjoy free elections next year and that he would surrender his office to his successor under the Constitution.  General Batista was interviewed in Havana by Martin Agronsky of the National Broadcasting Company.
