Batista Stresses Peaceful Motives

Special to The New York Times

HAVANA, June 24 – The Cuban Government is determined to solve national problems in a peaceful and democratic manner, President Fulgencio Batista said today.

At the same time, he declared that if violence and terrorism continued, neither the Government nor its armed forces would be responsible for what happened to the perpetrators.

The President made the statements at the Camp Columbia army headquarters following a conference with the chiefs of the army, navy and the police.

He described the meeting scheduled for Sunday by Government political parties to open the campaign for the 1958 presidential elections as a demonstration that the people desire elections as a solution of the island’s problems.

An attempt to kill Dr. Candido Mora Morales, an intimate friend of President Batista, was made today.  An automobile drew up beside his car and one of the occupants opened fire with a machine gun.  Antonio Rodriguez, who was driving Dr. Mora’s car, died later of bullet wounds.
