Cuba Holiday Death: Family Pays Tribute

By Charlie Hamilton and Emma Gunby, PA News

The family of a woman who died after a car hit the rickshaw-style taxi she was travelling in while on holiday in Cuba tonight paid tribute to the “amazing” mother who “lived for her family”.

Gillian Owen, 45, from Warrington, Cheshire suffered fatal injuries after a car ploughed into the three-wheeled vehicle while she was on holiday with her family.

Her husband Tony, 56, was in a coma for two days, and the couple’s 12-year-old daughter Georgia was badly-burned.

The family, who were staying in the resort of Varadero, were travelling in a “co-co taxi” following a trip to swim with dolphins when the accident happened on August 5.

Mrs Owen’s step-daughter, Amber, tonight told how moped riders, believed to be tourists, were driving close to the taxi and causing cars to swerve, one of which collided with the rickshaw.

She said: “There were about five people on three mopeds riding recklessly right beside (the couple’s) taxi.”

“Nobody’s really sure what happened, but there were about five people on three mopeds and they driving recklessly and there were cars swerving out of the way, trying not to hit them.

“One of the vehicles hit the rickshaw and the next thing my father remembers is waking up in the hospital in Varadero.”

She refused to blame these people for causing the crash but said Cuban police were anxious to speak to them.

The family had been “devastated” by the death that had followed a “wonderful” holiday, she said.

She added: “(Her step-mother and father) had had a wonderful holiday. They had fallen in love all over again.

“Gill was so full of life and vitality. She was an amazing woman.

“She lived for her family. This has just been devastating for everyone.

“My dad and Gill had had such a perfect holiday and they were due to come back the next day.”

Mr Owen was treated in a private hospital in the Cuban capital of Havana before being flown back to the UK.

He received treatment at Fazakerley Hospital in Cheshire and his daughter was treated at Booth Hall hospital in Manchester for burns.

Mr Owens has since come out of his coma and both he and his daughter are being comforted by relatives at the family home.

A private funeral for Mrs Owen will be held on Thursday.
