Munitions Case Hearing Today

Three men charged with trying to fly out of Miami with a load of bombs will be given a preliminary hearing at 2:30 p.m. today before U.S. Commissioner Edward P. Swan.

Arrested by U.S. Customs agents at the Tamiami Airport in the pre-dawn hours Monday were Arthur A. Girteir, 25, Marcos Rodriguez y Ramos, 22, and Barbaro Balan y Garcia, 30.

They were charged with attempting to illegally export "munitions of war," in this case three 100-pound bombs.

Agents also seized some 15 pounds of gelatin explosives and "other articles" plus an Apache plane.

All three were brought before Swan Monday but the hearing was continued until 2:30 p.m. today at the request of defense attorney Melvyn Greenspan so an interpreter could be used.

Girteit, the pilot, and his two Cuban-born companions refused to discuss the destination of the plane and its load of bombs.

However, sources said they had planned to bomb targets inside Cuba.

Swan released the three men on their own recognizance pending today's hearing.
