Hungry Army on the Bricks

A hungry, bitter little army of American adventurers, ordered out of its Miami barracks by police, milled about today with no place to go and no way to get there.

Some 50 of the anti-Castro "soldiers" waited around the rundown, two-story house at 1651 W. Flagler St., which has been their headquarters for the past six months.

They waited for the man who organized them, former Cuban Sen. Rolando Masferrer. But few of them expected him to show up.

We haven’t had anything to eat for two days except for a little chow which we chipped in to buy," one of the volunteers said.

"Unless Rolando finds a place for us, we have no place to go."

One man, bearded in the manner of Cuban Director Fidel Castro, said bitterly:

"One armless army for sale."

Another said, "That’s been our motto for the past week – ever since Masferrer quit doing anything about taking care of us."

Miami Police Sergeant Charles Sapp told the 50-odd Masferrer followers to be out of the house by noon of face arrest for vagrancy. He said they had become a public nuisance.

But at noon, neither the police nor Masferrer had put in an appearance.
