Dear Dr. Antonio de la Cova,

Due to the overwhelming number of proposals that we received in response to our call for papers, the committee is still in the process of evaluating the proposals. The committee should have a final decision in the coming weeks. I will be sure to inform you as soon as a final decision has been made.

Please feel free to contact me with any other questions or concerns.

Dear Ms. Karpoich,
I still have not heard from the committee regarding my paper proposal. Could you please tell me if a decision has been made or how close it is to be made? I need to coordinate other travel arrangements
around the same time of the conference.

Dear Ms. Karpoich,
I wrote you two weeks ago indicating that I had not heard from the planning committee regarding my paper proposal "Cubans in the American Civil War." I still have not heard from anyone regarding my proposal and the planning committee deadline was a month ago.
I am planning my scheduled events for next semester and need this information as soon as possible. Could you please be so kind as to inform me of the status of my paper proposal.
 Thank you.
 Dr. Antonio de la Cova

This is the third email that I have sent you in the last five weeks requesting to know if my paper proposal "Cubans in the Civil War" had been accepted by the planning committee for the March 2011 Cuba Future Symposium of LASA. You have not had the professional courtesy to reply to my messages. I therefore assume that the planning committee rejected my paper proposal, which you previously described as "extremely interesting." During my fifteen years in academia, I have never dealt with an organization as discourteous and irresponsible as yours.

subject Re: Cuba Futures Conference Update

Dear Dr. Font:
In May 2010 I submitted my paper proposal "Cubans in the American Civil War" for the March 2011 Cuba Futures Symposium. On June 2, 2010, I received the following reply from Veronica Karpoich, your Special Projects Coordinator:
"The paper selection committee has begun a preliminary evaluation following the initial round of proposal submission. We will be in touch to let you know if your paper has been accepted for presentation closer to the paper deadline, July 2010. Your proposal proves to be extremely interesting, and we look forward to reading your paper and hearing more about your research.  Please do not hesitate if you have any questions. Thank you for your interest!"
On August 30, 2010, I inquired about my proposal and Ms. Karpoich responded the next day:
"Due to the overwhelming number of proposals that we received in response to our call for papers, the committee is still in the process of evaluating the proposals. The committee should have a final decision in the coming weeks. I will be sure to inform you as soon as a final decision has been made."
I inquired again about the proposal on October 4, 2010, and received the following reply two days later:
"Thank you for your e-mail. The committee is in the final stages of evaluating all proposals. The planning committee is committed to having all decisions made by October 15th. I fully understand your concern, and apologize on behalf of the committee for the delay. I will be in touch as soon as the Committee reaches its final decision."
On November 1, 2010, I again emailed Ms. Karpoich for a reply:
" It's been two weeks since the planning committee made their final decision on the submitted proposals. I still have not heard from them.  Could you please tell me if my paper proposal was accepted?"
  Ms. Karpoich never replied.
Two weeks later, on November 15th, I emailed Ms. Karpoich the following:
" I wrote you two weeks ago indicating that I had not heard from the planning committee regarding my paper proposal "Cubans in the American Civil War." I still have not heard from anyone regarding my proposal and the planning committee deadline was a month ago. I am planning my scheduled events for next semester and need this information as soon as possible. Could you please be so kind as to inform me of the status of my paper proposal. Thank you."
Once again, I received no reply.
Then on December 9, 2010, I sent Ms. Karpoich the following email:
"This is the third email that I have sent you in the last five weeks requesting to know if my paper proposal "Cubans in the Civil War" had been accepted by the planning committee for the March 2011 Cuba Future Symposium of LASA. You have not had the professional courtesy to reply to my messages. I therefore assume that the planning committee rejected my paper proposal, which you previously described as "extremely interesting." During my fifteen years in academia, I have never dealt with an organization as discourteous and irresponsible as yours."
I never heard again from the conference until now, when I received your generic email requesting final paper submissions from participants.
I still don't know if my paper proposal has been approved. Could you please inform me of the status of my paper proposal? If it has been accepted, will you let me know what panel it has been assigned to and who the other panelists are and the title of their papers? I looked it up on the conference website, but it does not list participants or their paper presentations.
  Sincerely,
  Dr. Antonio de la Cova
